Architectural Historian

Position Overview:
MASON is currently seeking an architectural historian. The work entails historical investigations of buildings and infrastructure-related structures such as roads and bridges, canals, culverts, lava rock walls, and historic irrigation infrastructure from Hawai‘i’s former sugar plantations. Field work for these resources may be in the urban environment or entail site visits to remote locations.
Work tasks will include conducting fieldwork and research, writing reports, evaluating the historic significance and integrity of historical resources, and evaluating effects of proposed projects on historic resources. Work products include writing HABS/HAER/HALS, National/Hawaii Register of Historic Places nominations, historic inventory surveys, historic context studies, and historical consulting for State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) project reviews. Roughly 35% of the work is in the field, while 65% is in the office.
Required Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in history or historic preservation-related field.
- Familiarity with National Register Historic Places guidelines for evaluating significance of historic properties.
Preferred Qualifications (Not Required:
- Project management experience.
- Interest and experience in Hawaiian history and military history.
- Knowledge of Cold War era military history a plus.
- Familiarity and understanding of historic preservation legislation at the federal (NHPA Section 106) and state (Hawai‘i Administrative Rules §13-275/§13-284, and Hawai‘i Revised Statutes Chapter 6E) levels.
- Geographic Information System (GIS) skills.
- Graphic support skills (Photoshop/InDesign).
An ideal candidate is one who works well within a team but is also able to manage individual projects alone. Above all, we seek a candidate with good communication skills.
Additional Requirements:
- Currently reside on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, or are willing to relocate.
- Ability to travel to the Pacific Region (Guam, etc) is required.
- Driver’s License.
Compensation & Benefits:
Salary: $65k-$85k annually (commensurate with experience)
